Child Play Therapy

Child Play Therapy

Here in The Family Resource Centre we offer the service of Child Play Therapy.

This is a confidential service overseen by our qualified, accredited and experienced Play Therapists (IAPTP & BACP).

Our Play Therapy sessions are for children aged 3 to 13 years with special rates for low income families.

Child Play Therapy is a structured, evidence-based therapeutic approach that uses play to help children express emotions, process experiences, and develop coping skills.

How it works?

Children often lack the vocabulary or cognitive skills to express complex emotions. Play therapy bridges this gap by creating a safe, supportive environment where children can act out feelings and experiences. Therapists observe play behaviours, identify strategies, and resolve psychosocial difficulties. Sessions may be directive, where the therapist guides activities, or non-directive, allowing the child to lead the play.

The Benefits of Play Therapy

Play Therapy offers numerous benefits for children, including;

  • Emotional Regulation: Reduces anxiety, meltdowns and stress responses
  • Improved Social Skills: Encourages empathy, cooperation and communication
  • Coping and Problem-solving: Helps children develop creative strategies for challenges
  • Self-esteem and Confidence: Children gain  a sense of agency by making choices in play
  • Healing from Trauma: Provides a safe outlet for processing grief, abuse or major life changes
  • Family Relationships: Involves parents or caregivers in filial therapy to strengthen bonds

Who can benefit?

Child Play Therapy is most effective for children aged 3 to 12, though it can be adapted for younger children, adolescents and adults with cognitive or emotional challenges. It is particularly helpful for children experiencing:

  • Anxiety, depression or ADHD
  • Trauma, grief or family disruptions
  • Developmental delays or learning disabilities
  • Behavioural issues or social difficulties

Cool Kids Club

We run our Cool Kids Club every Monday from 3pm – 5pm for kids aged between 5 to 12, with a €3 charge per child.

Our club’s philosophy enables the children to freely access a wide range of activities. We provide opportunities in all aspects of play, accompanied by high quality care.

Our staff are all First Aid trained, and you can find our Safeguarding policies on this site.

Our staff are deeply committed to ensuring the children in their care feel secure and happy during their time at the club.

If you have more specific questions or concerns regarding your child, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Like our Baby and Toddler group, we have different activities lined up as well as trips/outings throughout the year.

Baby & Toddler

We here in Clones Family Resource Centre run our Baby and Toddler group every Tuesday, in centre, from 10am to 12 noon with a €3 charge per family.

Each week we have different activities for the joining parents and children with refreshments provided. This group is an excellent way for mothers to engage with other mothers while the children get to interact and play with other children in a safe space.

We also organise trips throughout the year.

Baby and Toddler groups are essential for the social and developmental growth of young children. This group provides a safe and stimulating environment where parents can meet, share experiences and support each other.

It also offers opportunities for children to play, make friends and develop essential social skills.

This group is a valuable resource for parents and caregivers, fostering a sense of community and support for the early years of children’s development.
